Tracy Tung - Lumps

Melbourne Movement designer Tracy Tung will exhibit 'Lumps' in Milan this week at Salone Satellite 2013.

Tracy is a final year student in RMIT University Industrial Design and I had the pleasure of teaching her in the first year communications course. I recall Tracy being inspired by the visit in 2010 of legend Syd Mead.

Viviene Chang - Empathik

Empathik, designed with an inclusive approach, is a mobility aid for seniors which transforms into a flexible shopping trolley. It challenges conventional approaches to walking frames, by integrating subtle feminine visual cues and is a light weight structure with ergonomic forms adaptable to the human body. The flexibility of the design enables users to adapt easily to surrounding environments and situations.

Vivian is an emerging designer based in Melbourne who recently graduated from Industrial design, RMIT. She has a strong passion for inclusive design, which focuses on benefiting the user. She aims to design for those who are disregarded in society or on the edge, by extending her own design knowledge into different disciplines. Vivian constantly seeks to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion towards others, which enables her designs to be a reflection of her. Her designs seek to innovate and enhance the delight for human life.

Ed Linacre - The Nest

Ed Linacre launches 'The Nest' this week in Milan at Salone Satellite 2013 with Melbourne Movement.


'The Nest' is a pendant lighting fixture that pays homage to the honeycomb architecture of a bee’s nest.

Made from sustainably sourced bamboo veneer, The Nest’s interlocking segments create a lightweight yet robust construction that can be shipped flat packed and easily assembled by the owner.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 - Industrial design education innovation

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet has supported the innovative teaching and learning stategies of the new Monash University Master of Industrial Design program in Suzhou China.

The light weight portable tablet is ideal for sketching demonstrations that bring the demonstration to the student at their workstation. The wifi cababilty allows the demonstration to be shared via large screen data projection or LCD screens in the studio.

Student engagement and learning is enhanced as the staff circulate whilst demonstrating and providing feedback on work in progress. The result is an enhanced studio workflow and higher productivity by students in class.

'The MADA Wacom Lab provides students with advanced individual workstations and the wifi Samsung tablets for each staff member allow students to work more productively' said Program Director Ian Wong.

Wacom Lab - MADA Suzhou China

The MADA Wacom Lab has been established at the Southeast University - Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) as a key laboritory for the Master of Industrial Design program.

Students are provided with a workstation that includes a Wacom Cintiq 22HD and a large screen HP monitor. This setup is state of the art for teaching and learning for industrial design and students were quick to take advantage of the resource as classes commenced this week.

Suzhou - Back on Air

The past two weeks have just flown having arrived in Suzhou and focussing on the commencement of the Master of Industrial Design program. I can now update this blog so it is good to be back.

The latest developments in tablet technology for industrial design were on show at a demonstration by MADA Monash Art Design and Architecture lecturer Bernie Walsh to key Victorian industry professionals. The use of the Samsung Smart PC and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets will feature in the delivery of the Master of Industrial Design program due to commence on March 4th in Suzhou China.

Program Director Ian Wong was particularly keen to seek feedback from industry leaders on the potential of the new devices for the practice of industrial design. "The Master of Industrial Design program units have been developed to provide students with the latest industry practice and technology, and the feedback today was very valuable' said Ian Wong 'Digital freehand sketching in meetings is for the first time enabled with the combination of portability and pen technology in these new devices'

The program based in Suzhou China will also feature engagement with Victorian industry through the application of tools like Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Facetime. Facetime was used to allow industry professionals unable to attend the forum in person to join in from their studios across Melbourne. 'Industrial design programs have always engaged directly with the profession and tools like facetime will allow studios across Victoria to work directly with students in Suzhou' said Ian Wong.

The latest 3D printing technology, wikis, blogs and Wacom Cintiq tablets as well as applications like QQ will also feature in the delivery of the new program.
