Ed Linacre - Milan success
Melbourne Movement designer Ed Linacre received an Honorable Mention in the Design Report Award 2013 at Salone Satellite in Milan for his new lighting pendant 'The Nest'. The prestigious jury panel included Younes Duret, Benjamin Hubert, Kuno Prey, Renny Ramakers and Nicola Stattmann who presented the awards at a ceremony held during this years Salone Satellite exhibition.

John dedicates his time to positioning the company for future success while building on its rich heritage, striking a careful balance between evolving the Teague brand and safeguarding the legacy. During his five years in the position, he's established and strengthened Teague's partnerships with some of the world's leading brands including Hewlett-Packard, Nike, The Boeing Company, Starbucks, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Rockwell Collins and Microsoft. John completed a bachelor's degree in three-dimensional design at Teesside Polytechnic, UK, and then a master's degree in industrial design at Leicester Polytechnic.
He joined Exatiss Concept in Paris as a product designer in 1990, moving after five years to Philips Design in Holland, where he had the great fortune to work under the direction of Stefano Marzano, building and leading design teams that embodied poetic design, passionate creative direction and a missionary zeal to exceed expectations.
In five years at Philips, John held leading positions in their Hong Kong, Eindhoven and New York studios and then, as strategic design manager, established a coherent brand language across Philips' ranges of telecommunication products, initiating and implementing a future-focused ideation process for the burgeoning mobile phone market.
His global experience in operational and strategic roles at Philips Design facilitated his move to Teague in 1999. Under John's direction, Teague's contributions to design have been honoured with dozens of prestigious awards including multiple Red Dot, IDEA, Good Design and iF awards.

Design Research Methods - Industrial Design China
Design research methods are being explored by students enrolled in the Master of Industrial Design in Suzhou China at the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou).
Design research is about practice so students were set the task of gathering research data from the famous Ping Jiang Road district in Suzhou.

The 2013 Cochlear PhD Scholarship will be offered as part of an established agreement between the Faculty of Design & Architecture and Cochlear a global leader in hearing technology.
Project Objectives
The focus of the Cochlear Research Initiative is to develop original and innovative design concepts and approaches that address the useability of future generations of product.
The Initiative aims to:
> Promote the unique challenges faced in designing medical devices and systems within the design industry
> Develop knowledge and learning about the design of user focused medical devices
> Upgrade the quality and breadth of design inputs used to create new ergonomic solutions for the future
Cochlear PhD Scholarship
Cochlear is a world leader in hearing technology. The company prides itself in manufacturing and marketing products that deliver beyond customer expectations, cutting- edge technology and a genuine focus on recipient needs.
The project will be concerned with user interface aspects and ergonomics associated with the use of behind the ear devices. This may include topics around the subject of retention, adjustability and daily use.
Scholarship Award
> Annual tax free stipend of $25,000 for three years.
> Course Fees for Australian / New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents will be covered by the Research Training scheme (RTS).

Vivianne Kollevris - Ribbon Chair
Melbourne Movement designer Vivianne Kollevris will exhibit the Ribbon Chair at Salone Satellite 2013. Milan Italy.
Ribbon Chair exploits the potential offered by high performance fibre reinforced concrete to create a piece of furniture unlike any other. At just 22mm thick, Ribbon Chair utilises the tremendous strength offered by concrete of this type to produce a thin and elegant form, in contrast to what one expects to see from concrete.
Vivianne is a Melbourne based furniture and product designer. Inspired by the beauty and mathematics of geometric shapes, her work focuses on the purity of shape and its potential to become something extraordinary. As a professional structural engineer, Vivianne uses her unique combination of creative and engineering skills to develop distinctive designs that challenge preconceptions on how an object should work, look and feel.

Melbourne Movement designer Tracy Tung will exhibit 'Lumps' in Milan this week at Salone Satellite 2013.
Tracy is a final year student in RMIT University Industrial Design and I had the pleasure of teaching her in the first year communications course. I recall Tracy being inspired by the visit in 2010 of legend Syd Mead.

Viviene Chang - Empathik
Melbourne Movement designer Viviene Chang will exhibit 'Empathik' at Salone Satellite 2013 in Milan.
Empathik, designed with an inclusive approach, is a mobility aid for seniors which transforms into a flexible shopping trolley. It challenges conventional approaches to walking frames, by integrating subtle feminine visual cues and is a light weight structure with ergonomic forms adaptable to the human body. The flexibility of the design enables users to adapt easily to surrounding environments and situations.
Vivian is an emerging designer based in Melbourne who recently graduated from Industrial design, RMIT. She has a strong passion for inclusive design, which focuses on benefiting the user. She aims to design for those who are disregarded in society or on the edge, by extending her own design knowledge into different disciplines. Vivian constantly seeks to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion towards others, which enables her designs to be a reflection of her.
