Samsung Smart PC - Bernie Walsh demo

The latest developments in tablet technology for industrial design were on show at a demonstration by MADA Monash Art Design and Architecture lecturer Bernie Walsh to key Victorian industry professionals. The use of the Samsung Smart PC and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets will feature in the delivery of the Master of Industrial Design program due to commence on March 4th in Suzhou China.

Program Director Ian Wong was particularly keen to seek feedback from industry leaders on the potential of the new devices for the practice of industrial design. "The Master of Industrial Design program units have been developed to provide students with the latest industry practice and technology, and the feedback today was very valuable' said Ian Wong 'Digital freehand sketching in meetings is for the first time enabled with the combination of portability and pen technology in these new devices'

The program based in Suzhou China will also feature engagement with Victorian industry through the application of tools like Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Facetime. Facetime was used to allow industry professionals unable to attend the forum in person to join in from their studios across Melbourne. 'Industrial design programs have always engaged directly with the profession and tools like facetime will allow studios across Victoria to work directly with students in Suzhou' said Ian Wong.

The latest 3D printing technology, wikis, blogs and Wacom Cintiq tablets as well as applications like QQ will also feature in the delivery of the new program.

Industrial Design - Transport concept sketches

Sketching and sketching techniques are vital skills for industrial designers and automotive designers.

The final model or prototype in a graduate exhibition is the result of hours of creative design work and these sketches by MADA Monash University industrial design graduate Frederik Dallmeyer share some of the skills and techniques he has developed in his undergraduate studies. The Paraton-e project is the development of award winning work by Frederik as part of the GM PACE program. Presented in July the project was awarded most innovative concept for future transport design.

Bernie Walsh - Workshops and tutorials

Bernie Walsh workshops are highly recommended and suitable for beginners, design students, or practicing designers. Folio preparation for interviews in Communication Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design or Architecture can be significantly enhanced given Bernie's experience in lecturing at RMIT University and Swinburne University's industrial design programs.

Check out Bernie's blog if you have not already and consider enrolling in one of his upcoming workshops.

Bernie Walsh - Wacom Lab success

Concept sketching by industrial design students in the RMIT wacom lab has proven to be highly successful with graduates and undergraduates attaining industry positions with GM Holden. Bernie Walsh is to be congratulated for the success of this facility in providing the high quality outcomes acknowledged by industry. It is also a credit to Bernie that past students, Ryan Fonceca and Glen Tay, are supporting current students by attending evening elective classes and sharing their industry skills. Ryan was successful earlier this year being recruited by GM as a designer in the advanced design studio. Glen Tay is currently an intern with GM Holden, also in the advanced design studio.

Mario Bellini - Shanghai

The practice of Mario Bellini has long been of personal interest to me as a collector, academic and industrial design practictioner. The Kartell - Work in Project stand at Salone Internazionale del Mobile this year profiled outstanding designers and exhibited sketches, models and prototypes of design projects. I was more than delighted to see Mario Bellini's most recent work up close and personal. The project explores the idea of the lights of Shanghai, which given my new role in China, I will see these lights a lot in coming years. The existence, in 2012, of the white polystyrene model is evidence of the continued importance of this design modelling practice and it supports my interest in this technique and it's influence on design practice in Victoria. (see previous post)

King & Miranda - Milan

Perry King and Santiago Miranda founded King & Miranda Design in 1975. I was fortunate this week to meet Perry King at Salone Satellite and to visit the design studio in Milan to conduct an interview for my PhD.

I have particular interest in design practice and asked Perry to reflect on his UK education and how over time his practice was influenced or changed by his work in Milan. The influence of early career work with Ettore Sottsass for Olivetti and in particular the Valentine typewriter project were of great interest to me.

The collaboration between Perry King and Santiago Miranda over more than 37years has yielded a great many award winning projects for clients and is represented in the studio logo of two hands. The strength of this bond was evident in an instant as Perry and Santiago kindly agreed to shake hands for my photograph in the studio foyer.

I recognised immediately the Jill lamp for Flos in the studio meeting room as I prepared for my interview with Perry. During my studies in the early 1980s this lamp featured regularly in international design magazines and showrooms in Melbourne. Designed in 1978 the Jill lamp is a classic from Flos.

RAPID CAD - Sketch to Model

This week was my last class at RMIT industrial design with first year students in the Communications Course and we had fun.

During each of the six one hour sessions in the new Advanced Manufacturing CAD Lab we explored the capacity of CAD systems to realise ideas rapidly. Each group generated sketches on paper for 10 minutes of either a bottle, a coffee cup, or a bike light. I then modelled these concepts live in SOLIDWORKS and saved a jpg screen capture of the model or render created in the session. Images were saved to the class blog as soon as they were completed. Students then began experimenting in photoshop with these source images developing important photoshop skills. Through the day we created the models and images shown below.

The real time realisation in 3D models of design concepts that did not exist before the class sort to emphasise the potential of contemporary practice to realise creative ideas generated by sketching. Teaching in the location of the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct reinforced the notion that these models could then be realised as prototypes.
